I am a Research Professor at the University of Utah, and I study fault zone structure using many modern methods across several sub-disciplines of Earth science. On the seismology side of things, I employ decades of P and S wave data to tomographically image fault zones in California and Alaska, I deploy dense networks of temporary 3-component seismometers all over the place, and I do supercomputing simulations of earthquake wavefields and earthquake catalogs. I use geological field methods to map fault damage zones and sample damaged rocks for lab analyses, and I map the locations of Precariously Balanced Rocks (PBRs) in Utah to learn about ancient earthquakes. I’ve applied some seismological imaging techniques to understand damage buildings and worked with satellite images of fault zones to measure and interpret earthquake behavior.
